Hibernate – by Heather Mirassou

Under foxfur dusk, ponds seal
shut with glass,
lungs of soil exhale frost and
iron sleep.
We hibernate, embers cupped
in ash and silence through
wintered veins.
Listening for sap, for bones,
for snow-drifted hours,
slow heated dark inside earth.

Heather, this pulls me inward. “Lungs of soil exhale frost” makes my breathing slow, and that final “slow heated dark” feels like permission to stay still. Also—I went looking for your “Garden Affair” poem but couldn’t find it; would you mind sharing the link?

Your quadrille embraced me with its ‘foxfur dusk’ and ‘slow-heated dark’, Heather, and I love ‘lungs of soil exhale frost and iron sleep’.
