Whirlsong – by Heather Mirassou

I usually write Free Verse poetry but after thirty years of writing poetry, I have decided to start writing some strict Forms of poetry. What has kept me from writing poetry in Form? Fear! Fear of failure. Fear of acceptance. Just fearing I am not good enough. Well here is another poem I have written that is not Free Verse. It is in the Quadrille Format. It includes 44 words and centers around the word “Whirl.”

Here we go!

Whirl and twirl, the twilight streams,

Twist of color, woven dreams.

Whirl again, the soft winds sighs,

Twirl of stars across the sky.

Whirl of heartbeat, wild and free,

Twirl of moonlight on the sea.

Whirl and twirl till dawn's unfurl

Endless dance, eternal swirl.

    Beautifully rhythmic (as usual)
    and joyous in its imagery.
I’ve recently begun a journey into more traditional forms myself after being equally fearful.
You seem to be having some success! I have spent the day wrestling with terza rima. An Italian form based around interlocking three line stanzas. It fun and infuriating!.
I look forward to more of yours.

I think I will look that up. I’ve never heard of that. Go for it!

As usual you were in the spam box. I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your feedback.
For without feedback from other poets,
I probably would not write. You give me the inspiration to keep writing.
Thank you so much for your kind words.

I’m always in the spam! I reached out to WordPress and their response was “Akismet is being over cautious” and nothing can be done.
Its frustrating, for the very reason you state here. Its really important to give and receive feedback. Otherwise we may as well read our poems to a brick wall.

I will continue to check the spam box after I post new poetry, because you always comment and post feedback. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment Dom.

I feel Whirlsong dances right off the page, Heather — those “whirl” and “twirl” refrains make the whole sky shimmer with joy.
