Cat Rent – by Heather Mirassou

    My cat pays no rent.
    Still, she owns the house.
    She judges every meal served.
    Then screams for something better.
    Apparently, chicken insulted her deeply.

    At midnight, furniture becomes prey.
    Curtains suddenly require immediate climbing.
    My sleeping face becomes pavement.
    She gallops across my stomach.
    Then sleeps like nothing happened.

    Morning brings another dramatic crisis.
    Her bowl appears completely empty.
    Three crumbs remain clearly visible.
    She reports me to management.
    Unfortunately, she is the management.

Paws – by Heather Mirassou – I’m Back

Hershey, black satin, length of my torso,
    Diamond green, serene eyes.
    Velveteen curious nose,
    Tongue like a pumice stone.
    Her elegant but waddling stride.
    Powerful, confident, and territorial.
Sitting like a queen on her throne.
Cat of mine, mother to be.

Tuxedo, black and white, bow tie and all.
    White sock-covered feet, satin gloves,
    Long white elderly whiskers,
He reminds me of Fred Astaire.
Quick, calculated, light on his feet,
    Shy yet debonair.
Patient, watchful and full of pride,
Cat of mine, Father to be

    Oreo, friend and foe.
    Black face and tail.
    Her body, white as snow.
    Fearless fence and roof climber.
    Mischievous youngster on the prowl.
Paws in the air, tummy exposed,
    Purring loud vibrations.
    Kitty of mine.

For Cat Anthology – by Heather Mirassou

I stretch my legs like rubber bands,
then flop sideways without a plan.
My whiskers twitch at empty air,
my tail flicks twice, then swats a chair.

I pounce on shadows no one sees,
my paws land soft, but sometimes sneeze.
    Ears rotate like satellite dishes,
nose sniffs crumbs, then hasty wishes.

I knead the couch, then bite my paws,
stare at walls in perfect awe.
I blink slow, judge every move,
and nap again - because I approve.

I curl in circles, tight and small,
claiming the sunbeam as my all.
A sudden sprint across the floor,
then flop again, and snore some more.

I tap at dusk, like it’s foe,
then trip on nothing as I go.
My tail waves with secret glee
I reign supreme, as all cats can be.

    I yawn wide, exposing teeth,
then lick my fur in careful sheath.
A sudden prance, a started glance,
then back to sleep a true perchance.
